What are we learning in Spring Term 1?

Reception:

This term our learning is based around Seasons. We will be thinking about the weather and how we need to keep safe and warm, we will find out about hibernation and we will also look at different animals and whether they live in hot or cold places. We will also look at freezing and melting as part of our Understanding the World area of learning.

‘Rhyme Time’ is our theme for English and we will be looking at rhyming words in stories. We will focus some of our learning around the stories ‘Peace at Last’, ‘Whatever Next’, ‘How to Catch a Star and ‘Lost and Found’. Later in the term, we will find out about the celebrations of Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday and Valentine’s Day.

Year 1 and 2:

This term, we are learning about the Seasons in Geography. We will be identifying different weather patterns and events that occur during each season and considering what we might wear. In Science, we are learning about Plants and we will be planting bulbs and observing their growth during the term. In English, we are reading Meerkat Mail and we will be writing descriptions of the characters we read about as well as the various settings such as the Kalahari Desert. In Maths, we are looking at Place Value and understand the numbers up to 20 considering how many tens and ones there are. In Year 2, we are looking at money counting pounds, pence and notes

Daily Phonics and Reading:

Alongside the daily phonics sessions, we will continue to hear your child read so please can we ask that their reading books, along with their reading records, are kept in their book bags and brought to school every day. Please also record any times you read with your child at home in their reading records. Please do not hesitate to ask a member of the team if you have any questions regarding this.
