Class 3
Welcome to Class 3 - Year 5/6
Class 3 is taught by Mrs. Bird.
Mrs. Bird’s recommended reads:
What are we learning in the Summer Term?
Year 5/6
This term, our learning is based around the following:
English
In the summer term, our Year 5/6 English curriculum is centred around reading and writing linked to high-quality texts and multimedia stimuli. Pupils will explore the features and structure of biographies and information texts, with opportunities to apply these in their own writing, including links to our Local History topic. Alongside this, we will be using the animated film Shrek as a rich and engaging stimulus for developing descriptive writing, focusing on setting and character description, narrative structure, and the use of figurative language. In reading, pupils will work on key content domains including retrieval, inference, vocabulary, and summarising, supported by personalised learning pathways through the Century platform. The term provides a balance of fiction and non-fiction, designed to develop reading fluency, writing stamina, and purposeful cross-curricular literacy.
Maths
In the summer term, our mixed Year 5/6 class follows the updated White Rose Maths overview, with a focus on deepening understanding in algebra, ratio, geometry, and statistics. Year 6 pupils are introduced to algebra, learning to use simple formulae, generate and describe number sequences, and solve equations and problems involving unknowns. They also explore ratio, using multiplicative reasoning to solve problems involving scaling and proportion. In geometry, both Year 5 and 6 develop their understanding of angles, identifying, estimating, measuring, and calculating angles in a variety of contexts, including around a point and within shapes. Pupils also revisit key skills in position and direction, including plotting coordinates and translating or reflecting shapes across quadrants. The term concludes with work on statistics, including interpreting and drawing line graphs and pie charts, and calculating averages. Learning is structured to ensure both year groups are challenged appropriately and secure core knowledge in preparation for Year 6 SATs and transition to secondary school.
"In either paper form or online, Times Tables Rock Stars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. This format has very successfully boosted times tables recall speed for hundreds of thousands of pupils over the last 8 years in over 14,000 schools - both primary and secondary - worldwide."
Science
This term in science, Year 5/6 will be studying two key units: Evolution and Inheritance and Animals Including Humans. In the Evolution unit, pupils will learn how living things have changed over time and how fossils provide evidence of life from millions of years ago. They will explore how animals and plants adapt to their environments and understand that adaptation can lead to evolution by natural selection. In Animals Including Humans, children will study the main systems of the human body, with a focus on the circulatory system, including the functions of the heart, blood, and lungs. They will explore the impact of diet, exercise, drugs, and lifestyle on the way our bodies function. Across both units, pupils will develop their skills in scientific enquiry, including observation, recording results, and drawing conclusions, while building a deeper understanding of biological processes and human health.
Geography
Children will have the opportunity to explore their local area, study maps, and use digital tools to investigate diverse environments. Themes such as Climate Change, Rainforests, and Global Trade will encourage pupils to engage with contemporary global challenges and develop a sense of responsibility for the planet.
RE
In RE this term, Year 5/6 will be exploring the question: "What do Hindus believe about God?" in line with the Lincolnshire Agreed Syllabus. Children will learn that Hindus believe in one supreme God, Brahman, who is represented through many different deities, each reflecting a different aspect of the divine. They will explore key Hindu concepts such as Trimurti—Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer—and understand how these are expressed in worship, festivals, and stories. Pupils will also consider how these beliefs influence the way Hindus live their lives, showing respect for all living things and practising devotion (bhakti) through prayer, music, and offerings. The unit encourages respectful comparison with other faiths and deepens pupils’ understanding of diversity within religious belief.
Spanish
This term in MFL, Year 5/6 will continue to develop their Spanish language skills using the Kapow Primary curriculum. Pupils will build on their knowledge of basic vocabulary and simple phrases, focusing on topics such as greetings, numbers, colours, and classroom objects. They will begin to construct short sentences, practise pronunciation, and engage in simple conversations through songs, games, and role-play. The children will also gain an understanding of Spanish culture, including traditions, festivals, and everyday life, encouraging curiosity and respect for other cultures. This unit supports language development through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, laying the foundation for further language learning in Key Stage 2.
Art
This term in Art, Year 5/6 will be developing their skills in sculpture, following the Grammarsaurus scheme of learning. Pupils will study the work of influential sculptors, examining how artists use form, texture, and space to convey meaning. They will explore a range of materials and techniques, including clay, wire, and modroc, and learn how to manipulate these to create detailed and expressive 3D pieces. The unit will encourage pupils to plan, design, and construct their own sculptures inspired by a theme or artist, with opportunities to reflect on and refine their work throughout the process. Children will also evaluate the effectiveness of their designs and consider how sculpture can communicate ideas and emotions. This unit builds on prior knowledge while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and confidence in artistic expression.
PSHE
We will be understanding what happens when the law is broken; learning how to recognise and challenge discrimination; understanding the waste hierarchy; recognising the contribution people make to our community; exploring the link between rights and responsibilities and learning how parliament works.
