Class 2
Welcome to Year 3/4 Class!
Class 2 (Y3/Y4)
Teacher: Mr McIntosh
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Kent & Mrs Gemmell
Our PE day: Monday (Outdoor)
Maths
During the summer term, our mixed Year 3/4 class follows the White Rose Maths overview, focusing on key areas of measurement, geometry, and consolidation of number skills. In Year 3, children explore time, including telling the time to the nearest minute, using both analogue and digital clocks, and solving problems involving duration. They also study shape, identifying angles, recognising 2D and 3D shapes, and understanding horizontal, vertical, parallel, and perpendicular lines. In Year 4, pupils build on this by converting between different units of measure, calculating area, and developing their understanding of geometry, including identifying types of angles, classifying triangles and quadrilaterals, and plotting coordinates. Both year groups consolidate their understanding of multiplication and division facts and mental strategies, ensuring a secure foundation before moving into upper Key Stage 2. Lessons are carefully adapted to support mixed-age teaching, with opportunities for practical exploration, problem-solving, and reasoning embedded throughout.
English
In the summer term, our English curriculum is centred around high-quality texts, with a focus on developing children’s skills in both reading and writing through the exploration of biographies and information texts. Writing outcomes will include structured factual writing, drawing on key features such as chronological order, subheadings, and formal tone. Where possible, writing will be meaningfully linked to our Local History topic, allowing pupils to apply their literacy skills across the curriculum. In reading, pupils will develop their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through guided reading sessions and independent tasks. We will also make regular use of the Century Tech platform, where children will access personalised pathways aligned to the key objectives of the reading curriculum, supporting retrieval, inference, and the development of reading stamina.
Geography: Into the Jungle
In geography this term, the children will be exploring the fascinating topic of jungles and rainforests. They will investigate the climate typical of rainforest regions, identify the different layers of the rainforest, and learn about the diverse range of plants and animals that inhabit each layer. The children will also study the lives of indigenous tribes, gaining an understanding of how people live sustainably within these environments. As the unit progresses, pupils will consider the environmental challenges facing rainforests today, with a particular focus on the impact of deforestation and the importance of conservation efforts. This topic supports the development of geographical skills such as comparing climates, using maps and atlases, and understanding human-environment interaction.
History: Lincoln's Legacy
This term, our history focus is a Local History unit titled Lincoln’s Legacy. The children will investigate the rich and varied history of Lincoln, exploring how different periods and events have shaped both the city and the wider county of Lincolnshire. They will study the impact of the Romans, Normans, and Vikings, considering how each group left their mark on the local area through architecture, place names, and cultural influences. The unit also examines Lincoln’s strategic and symbolic importance during both the First and Second World Wars, including its role in aviation and military history. Throughout the unit, pupils will develop their understanding of historical significance, cause and consequence, and continuity and change within a local context.
Science: Living Things and their Habitats
In science this term, Year 3/4 will be studying Living Things and Their Habitats. Children will learn how to group living things in a variety of ways based on observable characteristics and behaviour. They will explore the differences between things that are living, dead, and never alive, and will begin to use and create classification keys to help identify and sort organisms. The unit also examines how different animals and plants are adapted to their habitats, and how environmental changes can pose dangers to living things. Through hands-on investigations, outdoor learning, and thoughtful discussion, pupils will deepen their understanding of the interdependence of organisms and the importance of protecting biodiversity.
RE: Hinduism
In RE this term, Year 3/4 will be exploring the question: "What do Hindus believe about God?" in line with the Lincolnshire Agreed Syllabus. Children will learn that Hindus believe in one supreme God, Brahman, who is represented through many different deities, each reflecting a different aspect of the divine. They will explore key Hindu concepts such as Trimurti—Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer—and understand how these are expressed in worship, festivals, and stories. Pupils will also consider how these beliefs influence the way Hindus live their lives, showing respect for all living things and practising devotion (bhakti) through prayer, music, and offerings. The unit encourages respectful comparison with other faiths and deepens pupils’ understanding of diversity within religious belief.
Art: Sculpture
This term in Art, Year 3/4 will be focusing on the strand of sculpture, following the Grammarsaurus curriculum. Pupils will learn about the work of famous sculptors and explore different materials and techniques used to create 3D forms. They will develop their skills in modelling, shaping, and joining, using materials such as clay, wire, and recyclable items. The unit will encourage creativity and experimentation, as children plan and create their own original sculptures inspired by a theme or artist. Throughout the unit, they will be taught to evaluate their own and others' work, refining their ideas and techniques as they go. This topic supports the development of fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and artistic expression.
PSHE: Economic Wellbeing
This term in PSHE, Year 3/4 will be learning about Economic Wellbeing, following the Kapow Primary curriculum. Children will begin to understand the concept of money, including how it is earned, saved, and spent. They will explore the difference between needs and wants, discuss choices and priorities when managing money, and consider how people make decisions about spending. The unit will also introduce ideas around careers and aspirations, helping pupils to recognise the variety of jobs people do and the skills required for different roles. Through practical activities and discussions, pupils will develop greater financial awareness and begin to think about their own goals for the future.
Spanish: This term in MFL, Year 3/4 will continue to develop their Spanish language skills using the Kapow Primary curriculum. Pupils will build on their knowledge of basic vocabulary and simple phrases, focusing on topics such as greetings, numbers, colours, and classroom objects. They will begin to construct short sentences, practise pronunciation, and engage in simple conversations through songs, games, and role-play. The children will also gain an understanding of Spanish culture, including traditions, festivals, and everyday life, encouraging curiosity and respect for other cultures. This unit supports language development through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, laying the foundation for further language learning in Key Stage 2.
