Reading KS2
Reading in Key Stage 2
At Leadenham Church of England Primary Academy, our reading curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading while developing the skills children need to become fluent, confident, and thoughtful readers. Our approach is rooted in carefully chosen, high-quality texts that spark curiosity, broaden horizons, and provide rich stimuli for writing. Children are exposed to a diverse range of authors, genres, and contexts, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Each reading lesson follows a structured approach to maximise progress:
Reading Fluency (5–10 mins) – developing pace, accuracy, and expression.
Vocabulary Development (5 mins) – exploring rich, ambitious language in context.
Comprehension (20 mins) – engaging with texts through instruction, discussion, and application.
Assessment & Feedback (5 mins) – targeted support to move learning forward.
This balanced structure ensures that children build not only the technical skills needed to read with confidence but also the enjoyment and enthusiasm that make reading meaningful and rewarding.
